§ 01

System Summary

rev.kin.
Reverse kinematics — knife moves over the stone
4angles
Fixed detent stops: 15 / 17.5 / 20 / 22.5°
mag.clamp
Magnetic blade clamping — no tools
stones
Compatible with any sharpening stones

The KMFS Sensei is a reverse-kinematic sharpening system — fundamentally different from every other KMFS model. Where standard systems hold the knife fixed and move the abrasive, the Sensei does the exact opposite: a large sharpening stone rests on the table and the user holds a massive arm with the magnetically clamped knife, moving it across the full surface of the stone. Any water stones, bench diamonds or natural slate can be used — the user's own stone collection, with no dependency on proprietary abrasives. Angle is held by a CNC-machined mechanism with fixed detent stops. Magnetic blade clamping provides instant, precise positioning with no risk of slipping.

Hardware Components

Arm with Magnetic Blade Clamp
Solid duralumin arm with integrated magnets for blade retention
+
Arm materialDuralumin ENAW 7075 T651
SurfaceHard anodising
Blade clampingIntegrated permanent magnets (NdFeB)
Blade protectionTape recommended (standard practice)
MotionUser holds arm in hand, moves over stone
Magnets hold the blade rock-solid — you simply bring the knife close and the system catches it. Taping the blade is recommended to prevent micro-scratches from metal swarf.
Angle Head with Fixed Detent Stops
Indexed head with 4 fixed positions for the most common bevel angles
+
Fixed angles15° / 17.5° / 20° / 22.5°
Setting methodMechanical detent — clicks into position
Optional accessoryContinuous-range adjustment head
Angle stabilityMaintained throughout sharpening
Four fixed positions cover the vast majority of real-world sharpening needs. An optional continuous-range adjustment head is available for users requiring non-standard angles.
Stone Height Adjustment Collar
Arm head for compensating different stone thicknesses
+
Height adjustmentScrew / unscrew the arm head collar
SpeedA few seconds
Stone rangeVarious heights of standard water / bench stones
Simply threading the arm head collar in or out sets the correct height for the current stone's thickness. Essential for users with a mixed stone collection.
Spring-loaded Stone Bed
Bench base with spring retention for the sharpening stone
+
Stone retentionSpring bed — press in, lock
Stone releasePull bed — instant swap, no tools
CompatibilityStandard water stones + dovetail-mount bench stones
Bench stabilityAnti-slip base
The spring bed holds the sharpening stone firmly in place. Stone swaps are tool-free — just pull. Dovetail compatibility expands usable abrasives to include flat diamond plates.

Compatible Abrasives

Abrasive type Examples Wet / dry Note
Japanese water stonesShapton, King, Naniwa, Suehiro…Wet (water)Most natural pairing with reverse kinematics
Bench diamond platesDMT, Atoma, Dia-Sharp…Dry or with a drop of waterCompatible via dovetail adapter
Natural stonesArkansas, Belgian coticule, natural slate…Oil or dryIdeal for final polishing
Synthetic ceramic stonesCorundum, silicon carbide…Wet (water)Cost-effective for coarse work
Leather strop with pasteCow / canvas leather + chromium pasteDryFinal polishing, burr removal

The Sensei is not dependent on proprietary abrasives — users can fully utilise their existing stone collection. Abrasives are not included in the base package.
